Hi Todd - I don't know if the previous owner handled him much. He'll probably go through this nippy phase until he finds out it doesn't work and the more you handle him. My black rat snake hatchlings nip me almost everytime I pick them up. Then they settledown. Some will stop down the line and a few may never. Doesn't bother me. They'll probably stop when they figure it doesn't do any good. If you are reaching in and he nips at you and you pull back; then his nips are working and he'll continue to do it for the most part. My black rat hatchlings are the feistiest babies I've ever had and I just love them. Don't be discouraged, keep working with them and they'll adjust and you may adjust to. It's all part of keeping reptiles. Good luck Todd
