From what I read, its previous genus was Zaocys and was moved to Ptyas only in 1998.
According to my friend, he has only seen them (P. carinatus) on the ground, never in the trees although like most snakes, climbing isn't a problem. This being the case, reaching their lengths of 10ft+ due to grabbing prey from trees sounds unlikely. I would think that Terry Cox's theory sounds more plausible.
Yes, one more thing, they are definitely racer-like in temperament and movements. When my friend catches them, they do not stand their ground but make a run for it. Being unable to hook or snare them, he has to grab whatever is closest at hand and try avoiding their bites. Most times, he gets zapped (ouch!) but to him it's bearable compared to pythons (Now that really hurts 'cos their teeth is long and they hang on!!)
: Did ptyas carinata get moved to the Zaocys genus?
: I read that it was being considered, but not if it was accepted or not.
