Hey Terry. Good to see ya.
I agree-- From what I have heard from US Elaphe breeders and enthusiasts, carinata tops out at around 6 feet. But I know for a fact they can get bigger than that, because mine measured out to 8 1/2 feet. Mine was also an ugly carinata, and it took me a while to actually identify it. At the time I hadn't had much experience with Asian rats.
The animal I had was a hand-me-down that came complete with internal parasites and a heck of a resperatory infection. Although he did well for quite a while, and I had managed to deparasitize him, he never was able to kick that infection and it eventually kicked his butt. I guess the story was that a local importer of exotics from Vietnam had shipped in a large quantity of tree vipers, and that big rat was a stow-away in the crate. It was passed on to one guy, who got tired of it and gave it to another guy, who obviously didn't care too much about it, which is how I got it. I really wish I had gotten that snake much sooner, because I am sure I could have saved it and would have a ton of cool pics to share. Not only that, but maybe the thing would have kept growing. :)
One field giude I have from Malaysia lists Elaphe carinata as reaching lengths of up to 4 meters. A Vietnamese buddy (that importer) told me he has seen a number of huge carinata that he claims must have been close to ten feet, but since they were always mean and stinky, he never paid much attention. Seems far fetched given what we have seen here in the west, but doesn't that kinda make you wonder?
Fun stuff.
