In Reply to: Texas rat snake - Leucistic - Environment ****PICS**** posted by Joshua Ingram on December 25, 2001 at 01:48:11:
Okay, I missed the "most likely to bite" post below. Now after reading that, does it ever stop? Do them become more tame with regular handling as them become adults? Granted, I would never give them up because of this but want to make sure I protect myself (with knowledge, common sense, and maybe a glove) when they are adults. What is the best way to approach them? I am assuming that from above is the worst way, very threatening and the best would probably be from their eye level?
Thanks again,
Josh
: Hello,
: I have two 5 month old Leucistic Texas rat snake's (1.1). I have noticed they are a little tempermental (different from my very docile corns). My question is could this be due to possible temp or environment issues? I have them each in a Sterilite box (~ 24"W x 14"D x 12"H). Each one has a heating pad on one side (covering about 1/4 - 1/3 of the cage), each side has a hidebox, a water bowl in the center up against the wall, a vine for them to climb on, as well as, a homemade (paper towel roll) hidebox suspended (towards the top of the cage) on the cooler side. I am also using Aspen for bedding. Please note, they are feeding fine (1 large pinky every 4 - 5 days).
: Lastly, the female (Frankie) seems to be more tempermental. Regardless of how I approach her, her initial reaction is to strike and bite. Once I have her she calms down. So far she has only successfully bitten me once (my first bite) which was no big deal (no blood, just felt it). As for the male (Johnny) he seems to be calmer and will let me approach and pick him up with no problems, so far.
: I have to say I really love these snakes they are the most active of all my snakes (2 corns, 2 boas, 2 rats) and I love watching them run around their cages exploring.
: Sorry for the long post.
: Thanks in advance and see below for PICS.
: Josh
