I have worked with wild caught adult fox snakes, wild caught hatchling fox snakes, and captive hatched fox snakes (all western fox snakes, _Elaphe v. vulpina). Splitting the head of a dead mouse open releases blood and lymph. These are powerful appetite stimuli for fox snakes, as for most colubrids.
