Hello,
The black rat morph that you have is commonly referred to as "rusty." From the bits of info that I have picked up, this is a form of hypomelanism that originated from a WC snake from North Baltimore Co, Maryland in 1981. As adults they are a solid brownish purple/mahogany color, with orange eyes and a patternless belly. Most people would probably not even notice the difference between them and normal black rats as adults. But babies are very different. The dark pigment comes as they age.
Anyone else got any info on "rusty" rats?
Thanks,
dg
