: Jean, I went through a bunch of my old notes and some literature last night.
: For a 4 oz ratsnake I would recommend Baytril over Amikacin.
: I would give injections rather than oral treatment. I wouldn't even consider oral treatment as it is considered ineffective for herps (this is from conversations with herp vets in both the private sector and the zoo field).
: 4 ounces = 1/4 lb. = 0.11 kg.
: Recommended dose of Baytril is 5 mg./kg.
: Baytril has 23 mg. active ingredient per ml.
: So your dose should be approx. 0.025 cc. Baytril.
: In the book, "What's Wrong With My Snake" by Rossi and Rossi, it is suggested that for snakes this small, Baytril be diluted 1/10. This would make a dose of 0.25 cc of diluted Baytril.
: You should give a total of five intramuscular injections every 48 hours.
: The injections should be given in the anterior portion of the body, and the position of the injections should vary.
: Please have your veternarian double check my math.
: Either of you are welcome to e-mail me with any questions.
: Good luck.
