Hatchling black rats alone vary quite a bit. I've had some from connecticut that resembled baby yellow rats being pale grey with medium to light grey or brown blotches, to hatchlings from other parts of their range being light to very dark grey with bold black blotches. Some will show a yellow tint as they grow. Others may develop red pigment between their scales. Do you know where yours came from? Hope this helps.
