Hi Kevin!

Here are some quotes from the Elaphe book by Schulz:

"Elaphe climacophora inhabits a wide variety of ecosystems and does not avoid the vicinity of human settlements. FUKADA, for example, found the snake inside houses, barns, and farm buildings. It lives in bamboo thickets, grasslands, along forests, road ditches, in clearings with brush vegetation, in rice fields and very often in the vicinity of water. In some areas it appears to have a preference for agricultural land, and occasionally it was found in the vicinity of dry-stone walls in gardens. RYABOV quite frequently encountered E. climacophora in the vicinity of hot springs on Kunashiri Island. Its vertical distribution ranges from sea-level to an elevation of 2000 m."

"The husbandry of E. climacophora is relatively easy. Because of the size of this species, a spacious terrarium is required. A temperature of between 25 and 28 C during the day and 18 C at night is recommended. Food in the form of dead and live mice are usually readily accepted. From time to time the snakes may voluntarily fast for a month or two. A preference for new-born mice was also observed and especially poor feeders may sometimes be attracted to this kind of prey."

I keep my climacophora in the same racks as my corn snakes, but on the lower shelves where it is a little cooler (about 80F). My male does fast periodically, and I can often entice him to eat again by feeding live fuzzies and gradually working my way back to frozen adults. So, I have found the observations noted above to be pretty right on. The book also notes on multiple occasions the shy nature of this species.

Have fun with your new snake! Do you know what sex it is yet?

Ronda
