In 1976 when I began studying herpetology it seemed as though the Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles were the "keepers of the scrolls" so to speak. Allot of universitities, host their annual meetings, symposiums, etc. and put much stock in their opinon. Most universities and zoos will update thier data according to what is published and/or supported by the S.S.A.R. They have the largest publication network of any soc. so when they publish a hepetologist's work it tends to stick. As a founding member of our local living museum, we on the staff always considered their findings/publications to be the latest and most respected.
Just my thoughts on it :-).
