Recently, myself and other people I know, have been told that E.v.gloydi is illegal to possess in NYS without a permit. This assertation that they are protected has come from multiple sources. One source cited that they were protected because "they have a small population in north western New York." Having never heard of this population, nor of their "protected" status, I attempted to verify this assertation. Still finding no evidence, I E-Mail NYS DEC for conformation of their status. Now the question can be laid to rest. This was the reply.......(this E-mail was copied and inserted below)......

It is not protected in NY. No permit required.

I was told that the possession of Eastern Fox Snakes (Elaphe vulpina vulpina) is illegal in NYS because they are protected. I have searched both the USFWS and NYS-DEC web sites in an attempt to clarify this and have not found anything to support the illegal statis of E. Fox Snakes in NY. Can you tell me NYS's position on this?
