Black rat won't eat

Back in early september,I caught a very nice black rat at a freinds house(he was going to kill it)Being a big fan of these guys,I decided I would keep him in my new 5'x3'x3' cage.Well I can't get him to feed.Should I put him in the basement to brumate,and hope he will feed in the spring?I have had a few wild caught black rats before,and never had a problem feeder.
