One method I use when needed is to not give the snake a chance to rear up defensively.
If you immediately cup your hand over the animal and then gently pick it up, they normally will bypass the initial feeding/defense reactions.
This really only works well on smaller snakes, but I found it a good way to lose the fear of getting bitten.
Although if you keep snakes and you handle them, sooner or later you will get a nip.
I would rather get bit by a ratsnake than a cat or dog anyday.
