: Hey ya'll....I realize I commited a Cardinal sin of herping today by purchasing an animal I had not researched first. ..... I was told to keep her at about 80 degrees with a warmer basking spot, and that she would grow into a calm, docile snake.
From the experience of one E. Freisei I've had for 5 years, they are NOT calm as adults. Matter of fact, this one, like most Asian ratsnakes, is more like a racer, nervous and jerky. He's 9 ft 2", 3" in diameter, nearly 6 lbs and handling him is like holding a pressurized firehose. He doesn't bite, but he is extremely active, alert and intelligent. He will gape at me & hiss a little if I do something he doesn't like. He has an impressive big mouth! Watching him hit a medium rat is similar to an explosion. I no longer feed frozen/thawed since such rats don't hold together as well as live/ stunned, and cage cleanup of torn-apart rat innards is messy. When he was small, he ate every single day, making him one of the more expensive-to-keep rat snakes. He's currently in a 5ft x 2 ft x 2ft cage and gets taken out & handled 2 or 3 times a week, in a closed room. My computer is also in the room and he lays on his branch, watching me type. He only uses his hide (upside-down plastic tote) immediately after eating. Dumps are always near but seldom in the water bowl (a turkey roasting pan).
