The "Bubblegum" rat snake isn't a simple mutation of the nominate subspecies Elaphe o. obsoleta, it is an intergrade between two subspecies: E.o. obsoleta and E.o. rossalleni (the "Pilot" rat snake and the Everglades rat snake). This intergrade was give its popular name by Bill & Kathy Love, of Glades Herp, who were probably the first to breed it.

: The bubblegum rat is simply a captive color mutation of the black rat (E. obsoleta obsoleta).
