: :I have talked to the breeder here in the usa about three years ago when the first one popped out for him.Yes they came from europe stock. He was at the orlando show way back when and he saw some bairds on a table that said het for albino and weren't really expensive.they only had one sex (don't remember male or female?)so he bought a couple. He grew them up around three years and had bought some normals as well from somebody else.Bred them together and had a ton of possible hets.He kept all of them and then raised them up (another three years or so).He bred the 100% het males to the possible het females and proved out a couple of them.I first saw them in the fall of (99).He wanted a little to much for them so I passed on them.My friend todd smith out here in calif bought the whole project from him this spring and at a show a few weeksd ago I took a really good look at some hatchlings, yearlings and some young adults. They are pure bairds if you ask me but I didn't draw blood for d.n.a LOL.....
: I am in the same boat as this guy was years back.I have a piedbald bairds that I collected in the davis mts as a yearling in (97)I bred a male that is from the same spot to her this year and I got five nice babies.I will see if they are hets when I put one of her offspring back on her in two years?

Shannon,
Thanks for the background info on your friend. I can understand what happened better now. I don't plan on getting any albino Baird's, but at least now I know better what kind of ratsnakes are out there. I think your friend is ok, if he honestly tells the story like you did when he sells the offspring.
Congrats on your piebald find. Sounds like an interesting project, and I understand how much work is involved. I'm constantly trying to improve my strains of Eurasian species, and sometimes literally have a large collection just of one species. Keep us posted.
