In a way we're always preparing for brumation. I try to feed them as much as I can in the fall and keep them going as long as I can, so I don't have to take them out so early. I like to keep them in hibernation until, at least, the beginning of March.
All my snakes brumate. It's just a question of when, and how long? Some of the northern forms can start to go off feed in early September, and wild caught snakes go off feed even earlier than cb. Juvenile snakes don't have to brumate, though, and I usually only put them down for a few weeks.
Usually E. schrencki and E. dione are the first to want to hibernate. I can usually keep them going to mid-October though, at least. E. situla can go a little longer, and bimaculata, mandarina, moellendorffi, and taeniura can usually go until November, at least, with moellendorffi sometimes not brumating until December. They will hibernate for three or four months, however. The Russian Amurs have brumated the longest, up to seven months, but I usually only cool them for four months.
