why not compose a well written informative letter/piece about the TX Rat (aka Chicken Snake) describing what it is really like, its value as a rodent hunter and how little (=none) threat it poses to humans. That way, rather than engaging and angering the "uninformed" opponents, you might change a few minds instead. Your goal should be to change their minds, not to tell them they were morons.
It wouldn't hurt to have a photo of a local kid holding one as well!
You could start off with some spiel about being "saddened" to see an unfortunate "Chicken Snake" meet its demise this way, and go on to explain the aesthetic and economic value of these magnificent beasts. I wouldn't spend any time discussing the stupidity of butchering that poor snake.
A well worded letter/piece might save a lot of snakes.
But remember, time is of the essence. The sooner you respond, the more impact it can have.
