Baby Rat Snakes

How big are Grey Rat Snakes when they are born? The one I just bought is about 14 to 16 inches long. (wont stay still long enough to get a good measurement) The pet shop couldn't tell me an aproximate age, and I'd like to know. Also, is there any rough way of sexing at this size? Thanks.
