Hi JY
Elaphe is a small member of the Elaphe having one of the largest distributions of all. They inhabit several different biotops including moist arteas to dry grassland. They are very different depending on where they are comming from but mostly colored in greyish with darker markings. From the eastern distribution you can find more colorfull animals with red, yellow or greenish markings. Melanistic animals occurs also.
It is not the colors that makes this ratsnake unike it is the breeding habits. They often copulate in autum and the eggs develop during hibernation. When the eggs are deposited, there are very big embryos within and they can hatch (high temp)in as little as only 13 days (Not a good idea though because the juveniles are very small)
They are very interesting and easy animals (as CB) and can reach maturity in only 16 months.
I know they are not as colorful as many other striking ratsnakes, but they have a special place in my heart and collection, so try this lovely ratsnake if you can get any cb offsprings. I will not recommend to buy wild caugt animals because they are often filled with various parasites and suffers from stress and dehydration.
Best wishes
Søe
