Substrate

Hi ,
I was just wondering , I have an elaphe rufodorsata and what would be the best substrate I see all your ( by the way very beautiful )pics of your snakes and yall use chipped wood or something related to this , well someone told me that substrate like this wasnt very good because the snake could eat some while eating ... im kind of new to this and i need info about what is good and what is not good and I also have an african house snake and would like to know the same thing about substrat .
