Greg,
My black rat has a tendency to go off feed in the fall, too. I've seen the same thing in fox snakes, eastern milksnakes, and even my Korean rat snake. The days are cooler and shorter and the snakes' overwhelming impulse is to stop feeding and look for a place to den for the winter. September seems a little early for this kind of seasonal switch in behavior, but it's worth keeping in the back of your mind, esp. if you live in area with an early frost. If for some reason you don't want your snake to brumate yet, try increasing the nighttime temperature and increasing day length and light intensity with a UVB bulb.
Of course, there are lots of other reasons why a snake might not eat. Make sure he's in good health, parasite free, and fully hydrated, and most of all, don't panic.
