getin a snake

i kinda like snakes, im 15, and well in my science class we have a snake so ive kinda been thinkin bout getin one, but my mom is way afraid of snakes, so what should i do to convince her, and what kind of snake would be good for a first timer, a rat snake, a corn snake, king snake, etc.
