I normally keep my snakes in tanks with newspaper for substrate.
I have a 55 gallon tank with 6 inches of potting soil and some plants I use it to keep anoles in until my small snakes get hungry.I also have a small glass lizard in there he stays buried most of the time.A student of mine brought me over 20 brown anoles recently.I put them in the tank.I figured I would put my 2ft long yellow rat in there to let him eat his fill of lizards.
Anyway what happened I thought I had lost him because I didn't see him for about a week.I did notice less lizards in the tank.
Today I decided to dig to see if he was there. I finally found him on the bottom under all the dirt.I didn't realize yellow rat snakes were such active burrowers.Does anyone else have any examples of rat snakes digging so deep?
