Maybe these concepts are too hard to grasp, although I explained them to my 14 year old sister and she understands them. People are going to sell their snakes for what the market will bear. If you want to put your snakes up for sale for an amount of money way higher than the demand warrants that's your business, but you just won't sell them. Obviously the demand for these snakes at that ludicrisly high price was mainly from the people who are in possession of them now. If people wanted these snakes that bad, they wouldn't wait for the lowest price around, they would be buying them for whatever price they are offered at. I don't understand all that gibberish about if someone chooses to spend their time on something that is known to not be a big money maker they should automatically be reimbursed for it. When you run a business to make money, you do not give away your trade secrets to all of your competitors, then you have no edge. How can people not understand this. You are not working with a exclusive morph descended from one animal that you corner the market on, this is a entire species in a larger amount of people's hands that just has been tricky to breed. Now that the smarties who wanted to make all this money breeding them gave up all the tricks, any serious herper can get a pair of imports and attempt to follow the same path, as opposed to all the specimens of said animal all coming from a finite quantity. I think the term "investment animal" is used too loosely in this situation we're talking about. There only people who would contemplate price fixing are people who aren't confident in their ability to produce these snakes competitively. Its funny how people are trying to come across as this is somehow unfair, either they're extremely naive, or they can't grasp simple economics in our economy.

Chris
: some of the other responses to your post seem quite ridiculous to me. What is wrong with making money from an investment animal? Many see this as if someone who could care less about snakes buys them to make money. That is rarely the case. The people who buy investment snakes are reptile keepers who, for the most part, love their animals. A high price is great, it is a great, it generally indicates that there are not enough of that type of animal in captivity, and encourages breeding of the animal. I think that is great. Most of the people who buy investment animals and try to make breeding reptiles into a business are the people who love it so much, that they want to spend 40 or more hours per week doing it. If you are going to spend that much time, then yes, you do need to be reimbursed for it. Everyone has to live, why not live doing something you love? Prices will change due to normal economic factors, but I see nothing wrong with being concerned about the price of an animal dropping. I cannot understand the posts of those who replied to you thinking that price was not important. It shouldnt be, just like in a perfect world people would repair you car for free and build you a house for free. When we reach a state in society where there is no need for money, then animals will also not have any monetary value. Let me know when that day arrives and I'll pick up some of the snakes that I have never been able to afford!
