In Reply to: Egg incubation...who tried new techniques this year? *pic posted by Jim Demirjian on September 04, 2001 at 21:03:04:
Hi Jim,
Great topic! I tried a couple things differently this year. First, I mixed less water into the vermiculite and instead added water to the bottom of my incubators. Second, I lowered the temp from 84-85 to 82. My hatch rate skyrocketed from previous years. I'd have to check my records for the exact figure, but I bet my hatch rate was at least 95%. I had *very* few eggs that went bad this year. The other difference I noticed was a decline in the number of kinked hatchlings. Only one this year! Woohoo! In past years, out of approximately 250 hatchlings, I would have 5 or 6 kinked. Whether that is related to the lower temps or less water, I'm not sure, but I'm pretty darn happy with the results this year. Now, if I can just get some of my stubborn species to lay eggs in the first place, I'll be all set!
Take care,
Ronda
