Kyle,
based upon your brief description I would say it probably is a black rat. Sometimes they are called chicken snakes locally, I haven't actually heard cow snake before, I think. That is why many who are in the hobby often refer to snakes by their science specific name, rather than the common names. Often common names are different depending where you are, often you may be speaking about the same snake though.
*When you spot a snake it is good to practice safe observation habits. These include keeping a safe distance, both for you and the animal you are observing.
Hope I helped
Jim

: IN KENTUCKY I HAVE CAUGHT MANY SNAKES THAT LOOK LIKE BLACK RATS BUT ARE A LIGHT OR DARK BROWN. THEY MAKE THEIR BODY INTO A ZIG ZAG WHEN THEY GET SCARED. DOWN THERE THEY ARE CALLED (COW SNAKES)
: IS THIS A BLACK RAT OR SOME OTHER RAT??
: I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY HELP
