I posted this picture last week and it did not work so I thought I would try it again. My brother in law caught this snake in the New Jersey Pine Barrens a few weeks ago. It is typical of many of the specimens we find there in that it is almost completely black. Very little in the way of bands or blotches, no belly color except for the neck area and it is, to me, a classic black rat. At first glance it appeared to be a black racer. I have caught these all over the east coast and this locality seems to produce the most solid black animals I have seen. They seem to be the mildest dispositioned animals also. This one was picked up off of a sand road and acted like a long term captive, never offering to bite or getting "whippy". We released it back into the wild and it went slowly along its way!
