: My Black ratsnake is more interested in whats going on around him than the obvious. He watches me and my stick with great interest, moves deliberatly toward it, but uninterested in the subject mouse or frog. Most unusual compared to other species. Is their field of vision different?
He is probably sensitive to the movement of the stick, especially with the smell of prey in the air. If he smells prey and sees the stick moving, he may be assuming the stick is the prey. Especially if the stick, and not the prey, is moving. I have cured my snakes of the nasty habit of following the stick during my experiments by hitting them over the head about a dozen times extremely hard. Baseball bats work even better. Give it a try. I'm sure that will break your ratsnake of the horrible, horrible stick following habit during experiments!!
