Well, there are a few very sad reasons you don't see them around more. The first and I think the main one is this. They start life out a "drab brown", as most breeders would see it. They don't start to turn the color of the pictured female for about a year. A lot of breeders say that brown snakes just don't sell. Second, they're not extremely costly (about $60 each), a lot of people are looking to make good money off their snakes and Russian rats aren't the ticket. And the last reason is they do like a long cold hibernation, I would say 4 month at the least if you're going to breed them, although I've gotten away with a little less.
Good luck finding some, as they're GREAT snakes to work with. Everybody that sees mine in person loves them. Very nice, gentle, big snakes, one of my favorite.
