The trick's to just try and stay really calm in your movements and not be jumpy as this'll only make the snake more nervous. If it does strike or bite, keep hold anyway, so that the snake realises this behaviour is doing it no good. If it bites and you release it then it will learn that this works and it'll never tame down.
No rocket science but I hope it helps...
