I would consider the Russian rat snake to be a beginner snake and a great choice at that. Also something you don't see every day, they're almost hard to find for sale. They are without a doubt one of the best feeders, mine having never passed up a mouse. With all that I've kept I've only been bitten one time. They seem to be very smart snakes and have a short incubation time to top the whole package off. I really can't think of any down side.
