Greetings, Terry:
What you said about breeders doing a favour to the species really struck me.
Over the past few weeks, there's been some talk in the Canadian snake forum about possible federal legislation being enacted against the keeping of E.o. obsoleta, due to the species endangered status within the province of Ontario.
I'm very distressed about this. I've had my adult pair for over eight years now (and they were already at least four years old when I got them). I've succeeded in breeding them, and I'm hoping to acquire a couple of unrelated individuals (females) to use as mates for a couple of the offspring. With such legislation, I'd be "s-o-o-l" in ever being able to obtain them.
I feel quite strongly that the greatest threat to the species isn't due to captive breeding by hobbyists, but due to the destruction of their natural environment (urban sprawl, etc.).
I do think that if captive propagation is permitted, it will lessen or completely obviate the need/desire that some enthusiasts may have for capturing them from the wild. Why would anyone want to obtain a wild-caught specimen, with all the possible health problems that entails, when perfectly healthy captive-bred babies are available?
Patricia
