Problem is we don't know which species you're looking at. Sounds like it might be rufodorsata from your description. They are the smallest of the three, to about 30 to 36 inches. The pet shop owner doesn't sound very knowledgeable. If they eat fish, they are rufos. You can keep them in a ten gallon tank, or larger. You can keep at least two until they're big enough to mate, then you might want to separate them. The setup can be much the same for each of these species, some like water more, all like it fairly humid. Keep temps. 70 to 80*F for good results. They are somewhat like garter snakes, but constrictors.
