: I just picked up a baby Bairds Ratsnake...beautiful little snake. I was told that it had hatched yesterday, but it seems rather large to be a hatchling. Is this species known for having large young? The snake is about 10 inches long...and about as fat as a small pinky at it's widest point. He refused a pinky after what could have been a stressful car ride and transition to his new home, but appears to be healthy and in good condition.
Hey, Keith. New to ratsnakes, eh?
It could be a hatchling ten inches long, yes. And it might be fat from not absorbing all the yoke, yet. I would never sell one that young, but since you have it, give it a chance to get started. Many of my babies go two weeks, or more, before they start eating, depending on yoke and other variables. Has he had his first shed, yet? I'd try him in a few more days. Bet he eats eventually, within two weeks anyway. Good luck.
