In Reply to: "Adult breeding pairs for sale"...Morning throw up posted by Pedersen, Søe on July 20, 2001 at 02:38:42:
: Hi
: It is morning and I am opening my mail finding 2 nearly identically requests....... AGAIN:
: "Sell me an adult breeding pair in perfect shape ready to breed and for practically no money" and I forgot off course delivered to their front door.
: Some people don`t even bother to say please.Do people think we are stupid? Why selling adult or gravid animals when we could have the fun our self watching the eggs pipping after years of hard work to get it all so perfect that the animals starts breeding. One of the most fulfilling experiences is to follow a little worm growing and growing and finally starts copulating, laying eggs and see the next generation looking out at the world.
: NO NO NO people wants to breed their animals the same day as they gets them or at the latest the day after..... AND MAKE MONEY!
: I don`t know whether I should laugh or cry. This morning it makes me sick thinking on years of hard work getting enough knowledge about a species and FINALLY breeds it.
: If anyone sell adult breeding pairs be very very alert, because it happens only caused bye very few reasons. Yes if someone desides to stop with a species or a collection, but that is rare, and all other reasons should make you think twice.
: The last thing to think about is the price for sutch a pair:
: The same as juveniles......(crasy) or a fair price. What is a pair price for an adult breeding pair? It surely depends on several things like age before maturity, numbers of eggs hatch rate, sexual equality and more, BUT they should be expensive at least 4 times the price for a juvenile, before it is even considered to sell a perfect breeding pair, and sometimes much more.
: Besides that the morning was nearly perfect. There are 3 european pond turtles digging nests in the outdoor terrarium and a Testudo hermanni too, so I will regain my good mood after a cup of coffee or two
: Best wishes
: Søe
Hi Soe,
Decaffeinated I hope. That post is hysterical, mostly because it is SO TRUE. I am right with you on this issue Soe, because so few seem to understand the blood, sweat and tears of the truely impassioned keeper. It is not about money (we often spend more than we make) for us, rather it is THE PROCESS that Soe speaks of.
The ultimate reward for all of the hard lessons learned is to finally see that long envisioned neonate pip his or her egg. A quick fix will never be a substitute for this experience and the type of individual that looks for instant gratification (big right arm) will probably be looking for proven breeder mynah birds, or piranhas, or something like that, two years from now.
