OK, so it is only an African House Snake, not a rat snake, but I thought I would contribute my experience from today.
I had a clutch of house snake eggs laid about 60 days ago. Only one of the 13 eggs was good, but considering my male died in November, 7 months before the clutch (the third) was laid, I can't complain.
Last week I was moving some stuff, and I accidentally knocked the egg container onto the ground. I didn't notice it for a few hours. When I did, it was upside down and the eggs had obviously all rolled to the side of the cup. Darn, I thought, I killed that puppy!
Because they are house snakes, I decided to keep the good egg. I turned it back over to what I thought was the top (from memory of it's shape - really just a guess). It started to collapse a little the next day.
A few days later, I decided to cut the egg open, figuring it was dead. I cut it wide open and as I did, I accidentaly poked the baby snake....and it moved. So now I have the egg pretty much cut in half, but I put the two halves of the shell together and put it back. Two days later, it is starting to dry out (the fluid inside, that is) I sprinkle it with water. Today, I decided to throw it away, but instead of the egg, there is a baby snake halfway out. It can't get the rest of the way out as the albumin has dried out, sticking it to the egg. I put the egg and baby in a few mm. of water, and presto, baby house snake!
Never give up!
BTW - she laid another clutch of 14 eggs two days ago in the water bowl (I didn't know she was gravid, she hasn't been in the same room as a male since November). They all looked like slugs, but still, that's 4 clutches off one mating, and counting. My record is 5.
