It looks like nine of the eleven remaining eggs are good at this point. They must have been out for a day or so, because they're still firming up. I'll keep you all posted on how they're doing. Right now they look fertile. It'll be nice to see what the babies look like. Thanks for the support. Later. TMC.
: (PIC:) This is the only survivor of their first clutch from 1997, a subadult, male, South Korean, Elaphe dione.
:
: My South Korean Dion's ratsnake laid 12 eggs! I just found them a few minutes ago, and have since put them into an incubation box. One is definately a slug, and two others might be too.
: I've been waiting four years to try and breed this wild-caught pair from Seoul, S. K. Lloyd Lemke caught these snakes personally (his wife was from S. Korea), and he got a clutch from them the first season he had them. I bought a pair of the babies, but the female died during hibernation. Then I bought the adults in 1998, and have been trying to breed them since.
: Two years ago she laid eight infertile eggs. Then last year she wouldn't let the male mate with her at all. She didn't lay any eggs. Schulz (1996) said they can lay up to 16 eggs in a clutch, but this is the largest clutch I've heard of in the U. S.
: E. dione is also extremely variable in the amount of time it takes for a clutch to hatch. According to Schulz, 13 to 35 days is the range. I had one clutch of Ukrainian dione hatch in 17 days, and my Chinese dione usually hatch in 34 to 35 days. It'll be interesting to see how long the S. Korean dione take. This is such a great species :o)
