Yes, some ratsnakes can mate in the fall and retain sperm, as with certain Asian ratsnakes. Some can lay without being with a male, I think because they just make eggs thinking they will mate. These sometimes get reabsorbed, or if they are laid, are probably infertile. What kind of snake do you have? Are you sure it wasn't accidently with a male?
