: Would love to hear from all you Mandarin enthusiasts on your egg incubation techniques, temperature, humidity, incubation substrates, hatching times, etc.Since I'm excited about my 1st clutch of eggs from my c.b.& raised'Hunan' mandarin rat,any info would be greatly appreciated to make this a success.Thanks,Dave[p.s. as soon as I figure out how to transfer my digital camera pics online here I'll post some pics of her with the eggs-any info on that too would be helpful].
Dave,
I don't see why incubating mandarin eggs should be much different from the other Asian rat eggs. I haven't bred mine, yet, but in the two years I've had them they have kept just like the others, and are doing very well. I would say they like a little more humidity than more northerly forms, but temps are fairly normal, maybe even a little on the cool side.
With the eggs I'd try normal procedure using vermiculite and temps up to around 82*F. They could probably drop a few degrees at night with no ill effect being a montane species. Seeing as it hardly ever cools down in s. Florida anyway, you could probably even incubate them on a shelf at room temps. Wish ya' luck :o)
I'll be waiting to see those pics of the Hunan's. TMC
