Injury to black rat

Tonight my family quickly made a U-turn midroad to retrieve a black rat which was trying to cross the road. I got to do the honours of moving him, and he had been run over near his tail. It looked like he had a compound fracture of some ribs. We moved him to the woods on the side of the road, but I wonder how likely it is that he will survive with that type of injury. He was as spirited as any other black rat I've moved off the road. I did my best by moving the little guy before someone tried to nail his little head to the pavement, but the little guy is in my thoughts.
