: I take care of a Black rat used for educational programming. He has been kept in a sweater box on a snake rat with all the other snakes.
: He has been shedding recently nearly every 1.5-2 months. This Monday he ate, while being extremely cloudy. The next day it was apparent that the skin was loose and ready to come off. So after a warm soak, the skin was peeled. We have had to do that for the other black rats, probably due to improper heat and humidity (we are waiting for a new building with industry standard enclosures).
: It was then found that the skin was dull and soft, and remained slightly tacky even 2 days after. His spectacles are also an area of concern. One was cloudy with a dark spot in the middle. Now it appears that clear fluid will come from the where that spot was. He also has a sensitivity to touch on that eye.
: My vet is at a loss. He described it as identical to when he treats snakes for mites with Frontline. He says it will sometimes cause a premature shed. This snake has has no known contact with chemicals other than vinegar used to clean the container.
: Any suggestions at this point are welcomed. He has been moved into an aquarium with some heat and UV light. Thank you.
