All I can say is that it really was easy to pull off, and we have had to do this before without any incident! However, I have learned a valuable lesson here. Perhaps we should give the snake more time to shed on its own. I have always attributed the shedding problems to being kept in a sweater box with no heat (soon to be fixed with a mylar heat strip). I have always despised this method because of problems with spilled water and some other problems. Thank you for you advice.
