it could also be a kink in the spine which is a birth defect. there's a lot of factors for this defect. it could be improper/fluctuating incubation temps, bad genetics, inbreeding, etc. the other birth defect that you may see in snakes specially in Leucistic Texas Ratsnakes is "eye-bugging". this condition causes the eye to protrude and to look larger than normal. it is also genetic and could be passed to their offspring. because of some of these genetic conditions some breeders simply humanely euthanize these deformed animals than try to sell them so they could prevent passing on the bad genes. cruel but i think it's simply for the better.

i also have a friend that had an animal that got injured by the previous owner(the guy he sold him to) with the screen top. the animal has a very ovious spine deformity and it also has an equilibrium(balance) problem in which his body leans to one side when he's crawling around. despite his injury, the animal is doing fine although you have to feed it smaller meals since its ribs was also damaged. my friend felt sorry for the animal so he took him back.
