: I have beenn looking into getting 2 pair of Mandarin Rat snakes. I have heard that the Imports almost always die. From what? Do they just not eat? Do they get sick? What is the difference between the ones that die and the one that live?
: Thanks
I have had the unfortunate experience of sending deceased imported Manderina to both the Univ. of Florida and U. of Tenn. veterinary schools, in an effort to further understanding. The results, I'm afraid, were not conclusive. I have also successfully deparasitized other imports that have gone on to become fertile breeders. My best guess, other than parasitism, is that the collected animals often go long periods without water before they finally arrive at an importers establishment. In turn, I believe, partially based on the universities limited findings, that some of these animals suffer irrepairable internal organ damage, that eventually leads to their sometimes slow demise.----Walt Deptula
