Here's a quote from the book Corn Snakes and other Rat Snakes on page 57. "If you are enthralled by belligerence in a snake, let us introduce you to the Texas(or Lindheimer's) rat snake, E.o.linhiemeri". They can be belligerent, but I have never had any problem with them. If you open the enclosure and reach down in front of one to pick up, it will probably strike at you. I feel the person's way of approaching the snake in itself will determine the snake's initial behavior. I usually open the enclosure and take a few seconds and then reach into it from behind and gently pick it up. I happen to love the Texas Rat Snake and the belligerent temperament doesn't keep me from owning several color morphs. Good luck.
