: Is there such a thing? By that I mean is there a obsoleta subspecies with a common name like this. From what I had always read this was a name for corns from southern florida, but I guy trying to trade with me is telling me otherwise. Any help would be apreciated.
The second edition of Conant's field guide (which is what I have handy) has an entry in the index -- Snake, rat, red (corn snake) pointing to Elaphe g. guttata.
Rosy rat snake was the name for south Florida corns.
Dunno what the guy is trying to trade you, but I wouldn't trust his ID (unless it actually is a corn snake). 8-)
