Sorry that I didn't post this earlier, but I live in N.E. Louisiana (Monroe) and the rats around here are considered blacks. The typical black rat from here has a faint pattern showing through as adults. I have seen some about as jet black as they get and some like a texas rat with a smokey black head. I have seen two rats from the LA side of the Miss river (near Vicksburg) that appeared to be dark grey rats.

: I AM CONFUSED ON THE NATIVE RANGE FOR THE "SUBSPECIES" "BLACK" RATSNAKE. I HAVE CHECKED AND REVIEWED SEVERAL FIELDGUIDES REFERENCE THE RANGE OF THE BLACK RATSNAKE. WOULD THE SPECIES BE FOUND IN CENTRAL AND SOUTHCENTRAL MISSISSIPPI? ANY COMMENTS WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
