Cage Decor

I am building a new cage for my taiwanese beauty and I have a statue thing I want to put in it for a decoration. I'd have to waterproof the statue first though and i was wondering what a safe way to do it would be. can i use any laquer water coating if it has a few weeks to air off before it goes in the cage or does anyone have a different idea??
