John, My experience with these has been very positive. I have two adults, 2 subadults and three cb 2000 babies. Hatchling's are typically pretty dull colored. The subadults I have, now a year and a half, were purchased at about six months of age and were very bland. They really started yellowing up just recently. All my males are more colorful than the females. My adult male is very beautiful. These get large. The book you have stating a record length 7.5' is not accurate. If you ever get a chance to see a rerun of that special that aired about the Barker's and their pythons you'll get a couple quick glimpses of some HUGE taiwans. 7.5' would be more like an average size. All of mine are tame. Even the hatchling's, now seven month's old, will take food from my fingers. They're still a little flighty when you first get them out but calm down quickly. Like all ratsnakes they will nip when right out of the egg but they quickly learn that your presence may mean food. And they do like to eat. My adult female is awesomely tame but literaly flies out of the tank looking for food. Your best bet would be to get them young, deal with the initial flightiness, and handle them frequently. They like to climb but do just as well in a large rubbermaid. Hope this helps, if you have any other questions feel free to e-mail me.
